Summer is the perfect time to go outdoors and enjoy the beautiful weather. To make your home even more relaxing and inviting, today’s Summer Gardening Guide shares helpful tips and inspiring ideas on how to quickly and easily update your patio. Whether you have a large deck at your house or a cozy apartment patio, with just a small budget and some creativity, you can refresh and update your outdoor space.
While succulents are great, low-maintenance plants for any patio, I recently decided it was time for a change. I was in the mood for a fresh, clean look that also added vibrancy and a gorgeous aroma to my patio. With less than a $100 budget, I was able to easily update the patio in less than 20 minutes.
Supplies To Update Your Patio
- Evergreen Perennial Plants
- Gardening Gloves
- Hand Shovel
- Potting Soil
- Planter
- Ornamental Accessories
- Candles & Candle Holders
STEP 1: Remove the existing plants and dirt from your planter.

STEP 2: If you don’t want to have to re-plant every few months, opt for evergreen perennials. These types of plants look lush and green throughout the year, bloom for at least 1 (if not several) seasons, and are easy to care for. The plants above are Gardenias (which smell incredible) and Bacopa (to spill out over the pot).
STEP 3: Add potting soil to the planter. Fill 2/3 of the pot, allowing for enough space to add the plants. Use the remaining potting soil after the plants are inside the container, by filling the rest of the pot and securely positioning the plants in the dirt.
STEP 4: When you take the plants out of their plastic containers, gently release the base of the roots from the packed soil. This will help the plant take root in the new pot more easily. Place each plant inside the pot.
STEP 5: Ornamental accessories add an embellished look to your patio table. Choose accessories that inspire you (like this gold mini Buddha statue) and add candles for a magical, romantic touch. Opt for naturally-scented candles (such as a pine scent), or go for bug-repelling scents (like citronella), if you prefer.
